Computational Intern Position

Day Zero Diagnostics is a bacterial genomics startup in Boston. We are modernizing the way infectious diseases are diagnosed and treated by developing a rapid diagnostic that sequences the genomes of pathogenic bacteria, and then uses machine learning methods to provide the species ID and antibiotic resistance profile. We are hiring for multiple internship positions in Engineering, Data Science, and Computational Biology. Current students with experience and/or interest in at least one of these areas are encouraged to apply. Fall, Spring, and Summer internships are available. As an intern, you will get the chance to work with senior engineers and scientists to develop novel tools and research applications for studying bacterial genomics. Candidates will be able to gain experience in a multidisciplinary and fast-paced startup environment, and will have the opportunity to acquire new skills and work closely with an accomplished team in a supportive and energetic environment. Depending on your interest and background, you will be able to work under the direction of senior scientists and engineers on various projects, including: * Building statistical and analytical tools to research and support machine learning models * Developing, implementing, and testing machine learning models for predicting phenotypic traits of bacteria from genomic sequences * Implementing numerically optimized CPU/GPU algorithms * Implementing analytical tools for reporting hospital outbreaks of bacterial infections * Performing bioinformatic analyses on bacterial genomic data * Engineering cloud computational pipelines for NGS data, including Illumina and MinION sequencing data


  • Bachelor's, master's, or PhD student in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or equiv.
  • Fluency in Python; Familiarity with git
  • Data Science interns: Familiarity with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or other machine learning frameworks helpful
  • Computational Biology interns: Familiarity with NGS data analysis, particularly ONT MinION data, helpful
  • Engineering interns: Familiarity with cloud-computing architecture and tools (e.g. Kubernetes/Docker) helpful
  • Highly motivated and independent, with the ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
