Computational Intern Position

Day Zero Diagnostics is a bacterial genomics start-up in Boston that is seeking to recruit a highly motivated data scientist to join our team. At Day Zero Diagnostics we are modernizing the way infectious diseases are diagnosed and treated by developing a rapid diagnostic that sequences the genomes of pathogenic bacteria, and then uses machine learning methods to identify the cause of the clinical infection.

We are hiring for multiple internship positions in either Engineering, Data Science, or Computational Biology. Current students with experience and interest in one (or more) of these areas are encouraged to apply. Both term-time and summer internships are available. Interns will work with senior engineers and scientists to develop tools and research applications for bacterial genomics.

Candidates will gain experience in a multidisciplinary and fast-paced start-up environment, and will have ample opportunities to acquire new skills and work closely with an accomplished team, while working in a supportive and energetic environment. We value intellectual curiosity and a strong work ethic, and look for candidates who are both excited to contribute their expertise and eager to broaden their skillset to new areas.

Depending on the candidate's interest and background, interns will work under the direction of senior scientists and engineers on various projects:

  • Build statistical and analytical tools to research and support machine learning models.
  • Develop, implement, and test machine learning models for predicting phenotypic traits from genomic sequences.
  • Implement numerically optimized CPU/GPU algorithms.
  • Implement analytical tools for reporting hospital outbreaks of bacterial infections
  • Perform bioinformatic analyses on bacterial genomic data
  • Engineer cloud-based pipelines for NGS data, including Illumina and MinION sequencing data

  • Bachelor's or Master’s student in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or equiv.
  • Fluency in Python; Familiarity with git
  • Data Science interns: Familiarity with TensorFlow or other machine learning frameworks helpful
  • Computational Biology interns: Familiarity with NGS data analysis, particularly ONT MinION data, helpful
  • Engineering interns: Familiarity with cloud-computing architecture and tools (e.g. Kubernetes/Docker) helpful
  • Highly motivated and independent, with the ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Flexibility to occasionally work evenings or weekends
