Head of Data Science Position

Day Zero Diagnostics is a bacterial genomics startup in Boston that is seeking to recruit a highly motivated head of data science to join our team. At Day Zero Diagnostics we are modernizing the way infectious diseases are diagnosed and treated by developing a rapid diagnostic that sequences the genomes of pathogenic bacteria, and then uses machine learning methods to provide the species ID and antibiotic resistance profile. We value intellectual curiosity and a strong work ethic.

As the Head of Data Science, you will lead the data science team in building tools for analyzing bacterial genomic data. The position will involve working closely with the CTO to develop company strategy around data science, managing a core team of data scientists and machine learning scientists, along with hands-on coding. This position will also entail close collaboration with the leaders in the computational biology and software engineering groups. Some responsibilities of the data science team include the development of machine learning models for predicting phenotypic traits (e.g. antibiotic resistance) from genomic data; strategy for training data needs and generalization error; creative tool building to accommodate large-scale, high compute needs; and integration of data science tools with production pipelines.

Candidates will gain experience in a multidisciplinary and fast-paced startup environment, and will have ample opportunities to acquire new skills, work closely with an accomplished team, and communicate results through patents, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications while working in a supportive and energetic environment. We value intellectual curiosity and a strong work ethic, and look for candidates who are both excited to contribute their expertise and eager to broaden their skill set to new areas.

  • Lead the development, implementation, and testing of machine learning models for predicting phenotypic traits from genomic sequences
  • Lead the development of statistical and analytical tools to research and support machine learning model building
  • Provide leadership to the data science team in research strategy, code review, and hiring
  • Hands-on development of organized, tested code with corresponding documentation
  • Present data within and outside of the company at meetings and symposia
  • Write, edit, and submit manuscripts/abstracts/grants detailing the results of the project
  • Maintain close communications with the management team regarding progress

Requirements

  • PhD degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Computational Biology, or equiv.
  • 4-6 years of industry experience in machine learning and data science; 3+ years of management experience
  • Expertise in deep learning models
  • Expertise in standard data science techniques
  • Fluency in Python 2/3, PyTorch/TensorFlow/equivalent, Scikit-learn, and Git
  • Comfortable in a Linux/Unix environment
  • Familiarity with SQL and cloud computing
  • Highly motivated and independent, with the ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
